Happy Christmas 2014

It's been mighty quiet around here this year, but we've not gone away, just resting up for a bit.  So here's a 25 tune playlist all wrapped up in one single post, from the God's Eternal Jukebox crew, with love from us to you.

Midnight Hour #19 - Nick Lowe - Making songs his own

In an interview for Vanity Fair five years ago, Nick Lowe had this to say about songwriting: “The trick is to listen to it. And when it’s finished, it’s like it’s somebody else’s song”.

If like us you have been following Nick’s career for a good while you’ll know that in addition to his own excellent material he regularly records cover versions, selecting and arranging carefully so that when finished, the song sounds like he wrote it, the exact opposite to his songwriting trick, but just as hard to do well - he always does. This Midnight Hour presents a good number of other peoples tunes Nick has covered over the years, sprinkling soul and pop amidst rockabilly and country.

Midnight Hour #18 - Glad To Be Back

Happily restored to the web, with shiny new equipment thanks to the vinyl that's flown off our shelves since Christmas, there's a different format for these posts.  We will be putting Spotify mixes together regularly from now on, starting with this set that includes gems from Al Green, Ry Cooder, Kevin Ayers, Joe Tex, Sarah Vaughan & Hattie Littles.

Aural Massage - Slim Gaillard - Jumpin' At The Record Shop (1945)

This tune is posted not just because we're big fans of Slim and like this cut a good deal, but also by way of an advert.

Shops are not the only ways to acquire good records - in fact many of them sell mostly bad ones, with fewer and fewer honourable exceptions.  For a limited while anyway, our team of bloggers have been busy elsewhere on the internet listing records for sale, so please head over to our page at Discogs right here, if vinyl is your thing, as it once was ours.

We are of course open to all reasonable offers, and we pack 'em up real good. (All proceeds are entirely for the future development of this blog, which ancient technology has dimmed of late, and not for luxury items such as food, light, heat or swim wear).
