Happy Trails - Bessie Smith - I Used To Be Your Sweet Mama (1928)

Recorded in New York more than 85 years ago, this powerful statement from surely the greatest blues singer of them all doesn't actually say how Bessie's going to be "real mean and hateful" to whoever is stupid enough to "two-time" her, but she leaves the listener in no doubt that it would be best not to find out. And quite right too.

Featured Artist - Floyd Dixon (Part One)

Born Jay Riggins Jr in Texas, Jump blues artist Floyd Dixon was yet another R&B performer who despite making a heap of great records didn't always get the full recognition his talent deserved.  Singing and playing piano on the West Coast after moving to LA, he took over from Charles Brown in the Three Blazers before recording with his own trio for Modern, Aladdin, Specialty and the Atlantic Cat label. When we said a heap, we meant it, but here's four to be going on with...
